Originally inhabited by the Luiseño people, it started off as a whistle stop in the 1880s for the California Southern Railroad. It was named Frazier’s station after John Frazier, a sailor who had dug a fresh-water well. After digging another well to expand his business, he was surprised to discover that the mineral wakeup of the water was very similar a popular European health spa located in Karlsbad, Czech Republic. Hence, the name Carlsbad! It was not officially incorporated as a city until 1952.

EATING & DRINKING
As previously mentioned, Carlsbad is considered to be one of the hot spots in San Diego for restaurants and bars that match any situation and any price! If you want to have a nice oceanview to go with your meal, you can’t possibly go wrong with one of the many beachfront bars that are available. You will be hard-pressed to find an ethnicity that isn’t represented by at least a few restaurants. The incredible amount of diversity in choice might even leave you overwhelmed, and in our eyes that’s a good thing! We’ll put it this way: Several food critics have said that they may never be able to fully experience each and every food establishment in the neighbourhood. If that’s not crazy, then what is?
Here is our recommendation for avoiding food overwhelm and getting a place that you like within a couple of short minutes: First, decide the type of food that you’re looking for. Asian? Authentic Mexican? Exquisite French cuisine? If you don’t decide, you will spend your night aimlessly wandering around town instead of sitting down and enjoying a good meal. Once you have that figured out, head on over to Yelp and look at the reviews for the restaurant type of your choice. Countless people have been there before you, and can save you from having your night ruined by a bad experience. After you have a few restaurants selected, choose the one that best fits your circumstances. Maybe they’re more affordable for you on a given night, or they have that one dish that you have been DYING to try for ages!
We hope that you didn’t come to Carlsbad to sit around all day in your room and stare at the wall! There are so many things to see that you will feel guilty for not going out each and every night. If you want good food, good drinks, and an entertaining show, there are certainly establishments that will provide all three for you at a great price. But let’s say that you’re already stuffed from a great dinner. What will you do then?
One of the hottest items that people have been talking about is the K1 Speed track. You get the privilege of sitting behind the wheel or a real go-kart that can reach break-neck speeds! Race against your buddies, or against the strangers on the track. Just make sure you didn’t eat or drink heavily, because some people are known to get nauseous while they are driving.
Do you prefer something a little less anxiety-inducing? There are several performing arts centers around Carlsbad that will provide public entertainment shows for free or within a theatre for a good price. Magicians, dancers, singers, comedians, actors – all kinds of talent will show up and do what they can to keep the audience coming back for more!
Last but not least, if you need to dance your heart out, there are many nightclubs in the Carlsbad area that will provide you with talented DJs and the atmosphere that you’ve been looking for all night. The cover price is affordable, and you can get bottle service if you have the cash on you.
Don’t spend your time in Carlsbad exploring all by yourself! Get a group of buddies with you and participate in something where everyone can share in on the fun. One of the most highly recommended group activities is going over to the Mineral Water Spa for a relaxing day off. Visitors will feel invigorated when their skin touches the rare mineral water and gives them the cleanse they have been looking for.
A hot trend that has been coming up for group activities is something called the “Escape Room”. Groups of individuals are taken into an unknown location with a secret room that spans several thousands of square feet. Using no other clues beside their intuition and the hints that are laid out all around them, they must work together to figure out how to escape! This is a great team-building exercise for companies, and there’s no better thrill than trying to beat the city record. Just make sure that you don’t spoil it for newcomers, otherwise they will end up missing out on all of the fun!
If you and your friends are searching for a fun drinking game, don’t stay at home! Head on over to Nozomi, a Japanese restaurant that will allow you to sample every single variety of their sake, which is a Japanese tea that is infused with alcohol. Whatever you do, just make sure that you are drinking responsibly!
We’ve already mentioned the LEGOLAND theme park in our introduction, but kids’ toys are not for everybody. You need something that’s a little more entertaining for your senses. If you aren’t too scared of heights, you would be foolish to miss out on the Air2Air tour! You hop into a private airplane and get a 30-minute tour of the San Diego skyline. For the business-oriented amongst us, you even have the option to use it as a means of travel from one place to the other.
Some of you are scared of heights – we get it! Instead of being several thousand meters above ground, why not head over to the SEA LIFE aquarium? It’s great for kids and for adults! You get to walk around at your own leisurely pace and see the best that the world has to offer in exotic aquatic life. Get there at the right time, and you might be able to see a live dolphin show where the animals do special tricks.
If you’re a history nut, check out the Magee House. Built all the way back in 1887, this museum will take you through the history of Carlsbad and show you how it came to be the beautiful city that it is today. Did we mention that there are beautiful flower gardens planted everywhere? Several gardeners keep hard at work in order to make this museum and its surroundings a thing of beauty.
EXPLORING THE OUTDOORS
With Carlsbad experiencing summer weather on an annual basis, it only makes sense to take advantage of the fact that you have great weather nearly every day. Head over to the Carlsbad South State Beach, where you can run around in the sky-blue ocean and dip your toes in the white sand. This beach has multiple uses, which makes it so attractive in the first place! Campers can choose to stay here for a few days and experience the outdoors without the possibility of bears snooping around their tent. People can choose to go surfing or snorkeling with the option to pay for instructional lessons geared towards beginners and experts. You can even use the coastline as a great jogging path!
If sand and water isn’t your thing, you can try heading on over to one of the many public parks that are available in Carlsbad. Some of them will give you the option to go on paid bike tours, where a guided instructor will map out a route for you and warn you of sight-seeing opportunities that you should explore during your temporary breaks. Failing that, you can simply take a leisurely stroll around the park and enjoy the warm Carlsbad weather. Sometimes, the most relaxing and invigorating option is simply sitting down on a park bench and doing absolutely nothing!
One of the art exhibitions that you have to see with your own eyes is that created by none other than California legend Gregg “Viz” Visintainer. He taught himself how to draw from scratch using nothing but plain paper and several colours of ink. Did you know that on average, it will take him about 60 to 80 hours total of drawing just to get a single painting put up in his exhibition? You will be very hard pressed to find individuals that are willing to spend 3-4 days straight doing nothing but drawing. People and art aficionados will come from all over the world to see these magnificent works of art for themselves.
If that isn’t your style, there are plenty of cultural art exhibits to check out. If you prefer to see some of the rich history behind Carlsbad, you can always head over to one of the museums and see how the city came to be. Trust us when we say it is far deeper than the introduction we gave. If you would rather see some live entertainment, there are always great shows being held at some of the performing arts centers here in Carlsbad.
Carlsbad is no different from any other California city in that it fully and wholeheartedly embraces its artistic side. There is bound to be something for everybody no matter their unique taste!
